Hard to believe that most kids are back in school. But guess what that means, folks? If you’re a golfer, you get more of the incredible Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course all to yourselves at Lake Blackshear Resort in Cordele!
If you haven’t brought your clubs down from the Atlanta area to Cordele then you are missing out. The drive for me and my family is just over two hours and it’s like a world away. I love playing golf at Lake Blackshear Resort. I don’t want to give away the secret that’s not a secret, but then again, golf is a group sport, and I can always make another golfing friend.
I’ll break this down for you simply. You can be a beginner or an expert or all between. No matter your skills, it’s a privilege to play the 18-hole golf course at Lake Blackshear Resort, especially since it has been recognized as a four-star course by Golf Digest. It’s also one of the Top 25 Friendliest Golf Courses in the U.S. according to Golf Advisor (2022).
There are some beautiful towering pine trees along the course. Did you know that a tree’s shade brings temperatures down by an average of 10 degrees?
The Vets Course is one of Georgia’s finer courses and offers great value for play. Golf course architect Denis Griffiths designed this course when it was built in 1990. The course has water hazards, mounds, and sand bunkers that define the holes and enhance the game. Wide Tif 419 fairways meander through mounds and stands of loblolly pines. The Vets Course is open every day from 8:00 am to dusk. Check out the Course Layout to read about each hole.
Here’s the way the experts describe Hole 18:
“A very good finishing hole. This is a long, dogleg left par-4 that ideally requires a drawn tee shot. The long, mid to long iron second shot to an elevated, two-tiered green must be precisely played. Par is a good score here.”
Now that’s nice and fancy, but if you’re learning golf, here’s what I would say:
“You need a really good tee shot with your driver (the big club). Should take up to 4 strokes to put the ball in the hole!”
Georgia Veterans Memorial Golf Course has a full-service clubhouse complete with food and beverages and a private meeting space.
- If anyone out there is planning a fundraiser, the Vets Course is perfect for corporate tournaments, fundraising events, and even group trips and reunions.
Need a 19th hole refresher? Our group always does. Cypress Grill is where the locals gather for live music, trivia, games and karaoke in the prime summer season weekends. It’s the ideal 19th hole after you leave the links and head for drinks – and huge pretzels too! Boaters love it because you can dock at the Marina and head right in.
Cypress Grill has the best regional dishes on the menu. It’s open this autumn: Thursday through Sunday. Follow Cypress Grill’s Facebook or Instagram for updates on end-of-summer bands and special events.
Ask about golf packages that pair weekdays on the picturesque Vet’s Course with nights in the comfort of the resort’s cozy lakeside cabins. Bring the RV or pitch a tent in the campground.
